Instacart is different from other delivery apps โ you're paid per batch, not per mile. That changes the math significantly.
Instacart pays a base rate per batch ($7-14 depending on size and distance) plus customer tip. There's also a "bonus" multiplier that changes by market and time of day. Shoppers in high-demand areas with good tips can do well. Those in suburban areas with low tips often don't break $15/hr.
Full-service shopper: You shop and deliver orders. You set your own schedule. Pay varies enormously by market.
In-store shopper: Just shopping, store employees bag. Lower pay but no driving.
Driver: Already-ordered deliveries, similar to DoorDash.
Tips make up 40-60% of many Instacart orders. If your area has low tipping customers, Instacart is genuinely not worth it. If you're in an affluent suburban area, you can do $20+/hr after costs.
Best for: Active people who enjoy walking, people in wealthy suburban neighborhoods, those with very fuel-efficient cars, part-time only (10-15 hrs/week).
Not for: Full-time income seekers in low-tip areas, people with poor MPG vehicles, anyone who minds shopping for strangers.
